Thirty National Titles - Masters Time Trial Events by USA Cycling
Published: 07/02/2009July 1, 2009 (Louisville, Ky.) – Thirty national titles were awarded on Wednesday during the time trial portion of the USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships. Over 400 racers from the ages of 30 to 86 lined up to contest the rolling out-and-back course in Taylorsville, Ky. Racing continues tomorrow with the women’s criterium contests inside the legendary Churchill Downs.
Due to the extensive set-up time for the nearly 26-kilometer course, the race start was delayed in the early morning hours. Once the racers began rolling however the action never stopped, beginning with the 30-34 men’s age division, moving through the tandem categories and into the 80+ division.
Riding the fastest time of the day, Tuesday’s road race silver medalist, Mike Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala./Marx and Bensdorf Relators-Triatar) grabbed a Stars-and-Stripes in the morning’s first category. Each group featured strong competition, however the 35-39 men’s field seemed particular stacked as last year’s champion, Tom Burke (Kentwood, Mich./Lathrup Industries) was bumped into the fifth spot as Peter Cannell (Mebane, N.C./Mock Orange Racing) posted another sub-30 minute time. That trend continued in the 40-44 men’s category as Chris Lyman (Napa, Calif./Morgan Stanley) scored a 29:42.46.
Fifty-year-old Ruth Clemence (Newport Beach, Calif./Simple Green) posted the fastest female time of the day with a 33:03.10 to win the 50-54 age division. Laura Igoe (Lockport, N.Y./Tom’Sprobike) secured the second best women’s time (33:41.27) winning the gold in the 35-39 age group. The 50-54 women’s age division did prove to post one of the most competitive with Sunday’s road champ, Ann Marie Miller (New York, N.Y./CRCA) forced into third in another talented group.
Sam Krieg (Pocatello, Idaho/Ice Rocky Mtn. Surge) brought home the silver in the 30-34 men’s division, only to be outdone by his better half, Karen Appleby-Krieg (Pocatello, Idaho/Ice-Rocky Mtn.) who won the Stars-and-Stripes in the women’s 30-34 group. The 90+ women’s tandem race was another family affair as the mother and daughter team of Patricia and Beth Roberts (Winston Salem, N.C./Pain Pathways-PVS) rode into the Stars-and-Stripes together.
“It was a challenging course for tandems with all the hills, but at least they weren’t that steep.” stated Kathy Kirk who won the 110+ mixed tandem division along with her husband Doug.
After an untimely mechanical in the tandem road race, Gilbert Correa and Chris DeMarchi (La Verne, Calif./Amgen-Giant Masters) got their Stars-and-Stripes in the time trial, posting the fastest tandem time and winning the men’s 70+ tandem category. The blind team of Kevin Myers and Greg Miller (Greenfield, Wis.) outlined another of the day’s great accomplishments, finishing fourth in the 90+ men’s tandem event.
Racing will continue on Thursday as the women’s 30-34 to 70+ criterium events will be contested at the historic Churchill Downs beginning at 10:00 a.m.
