USA Cycling Development Wrap
Published: 09/02/2010A new group of juniors road cyclists recently completed a trio of kermesses in Belgium while their off-road counterparts raced against world-class fields at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup finale. As part of the U23 National Development Program, Andrew Talansky (Napa, Calif./Team Holowesko Partners) was second in a stage of Valle de Aosta last week. On the women's side of USA Cycling's development initiatives, a team of six young women just completed the Classica Citta di Padova and are now racing in the Holland Ladies Tour in the Netherlands.
Junior development program

USA Cycling recently took a group of junior riders to Belgium where they contested several kermesses before heading to Italy to prepare for this week's Giro della Lunigiana. On August 25, two juniors represented USA Cycling in the Kemmel Kermesse in Belgium - Thomas Jondall (Tucson, Ariz.) and Torey Philip (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Team Specialized). After completing 85 kilometers in driving rain, Philip finished the event quite strong in 10th place. The next day, Philip and Jondall were joined by Austin Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes) for the Kermesse Edewalle-Kortemark in which they all finished with the main pack right before the rain started. On Saturday the 28th, the juniors contested a third and final kermesse in Belgium - the St. Jan-Iper Kermesse. Jondall finished 11th and Matthew Lipscomb (Greenville, SC/Greenville Spinners) was 16th.
Mountain Bike
Americans Seth Kemp (Campobella, SC) and Alicia Rose Pastore (Durango, Colo./Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory) both rode to silver medals in the junior men’s and women’s cross country contests while riding for USA Cycling’s National Development Program squads at the Mountain Bike World Cup finale in Windham, NY last weekend. Joining Kemp on USA Cycling’s junior men's team were Skyler Trujillo (Fort Collins, Colo.) in ninth place, Kevin Fish (Austin, Texas) in 12th, Payson McElveen (Austin, Texas) in 14th, and Nathaniel Williams (Hickory, NC/Scott RC Mountain Bike Team) in 17th. U23 development program
Road
Andrew Talansky (Napa, Calif./Team Holowesko Partners) put forth quite the effort at the Valle de Aosta while riding for USA Cycling's U23 National Development Program squad. After earning second place in stage five of the Italian stage race, Talansky completed the Aug. 24-29 event in tenth overall. Another impressive stage finish came from Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass/Trek-Livestrong) who was fifth in stage six and 32nd overall. Teammates Ben King (North Garden, Va./Trek-Livestrong) and Nate Brown (Covington, Tenn.) were 32nd and 76th respectively in the overall.Click here for more information about Valle de Aosta.

Mountain Bike
In addition to the seasoned American riders that contested the elite men's cross country race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Windham, NY last week, nine U23 competitors entered the contest as riders for USA Cycling’s National Development Program squad. Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash./Arlberg Sports) rode to 67th place in the Team USA jersey while Mitch Hoke (Colorado Springs, Colo./Tokyo Joe's), Jack Hinkens (Edenprairie, Minn./Trek), Peter Ostroski (Intervale, NH), and Tom Sampson (Plymouth, NH) were 76th, 77th, 78th, and 79th.Kerry Warner (Banner Elk, NC/Shirks-Trek Bikes)finished 83rd, Seamus Powell (Round Top, NY)in 85th, Ethan Gilmour (Ludlow, Vt.) in 87th, and Alex Ryan (Lewisville, NC/Champion System-Cannondale) in 96th. Women's development program

Six women rode for USA Cycling's Women's Development Program team in Italy's Classica Citta di Padova on August 28. After a rainy seven laps of the 17-kilometer course, all of the ladies finished as a pack. Wearing the red, white and blue for the event were Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Cedar Springs, Mich./Colavita-Baci p/b Cooking Light), Amanda Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./Team TIBCO), Sindead Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12), Shelley Olds (Scotts Valley, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12), Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12), and Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Colavita-Baci p/b Cookling Light).
Mountain Bike
USA Cycling fielded a pair of U23 women for the elite women's cross country contest at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup finale in Windham, NY last weekend. Teal Stetson-Lee (Durango, Colo.) rode to 47th place while donning the red, white and blue and her teammate, Lydia Tanner (San Clemente, Calif./Montana State University), finished the event in 60th. USA Cycling will field a junior team in a pair of UCI 2.1 races in Italy - the Giro della Lunigiana, Sept. 2-5, and the Giro di Basilicata, Sept. 9-12. The team for these two events consists of Thomas Jondall (Tucson, Ariz.), Matthew Lipscomb (Greenville, SC/Greenville Spinners), Torey Philip (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Team Specialized), Austin Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes), Kristo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho/Hammer Nutrition), and Ben Gabardi (Madison, Miss./Herring Gas Cycling Team).
A squad of six talented U23 men will ride for USA Cycling's National Development Program team in the upcoming Tour de l'Avenir. The event takes place Sept. 5-12 and the U.S. team consists of Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./Trek-Livestrong), Andrew Talansky (Napa, Calif./Team Holowesko Partners), Chris Butler (Hilton Head, SC/BMC), Ben King (North Garden, Va./Trek-Livestrong), Ian Boswell, and Alex Howes. Following the Tour de l'Avenir, USA Cycling will field a team of six for the Tour of China, Sept. 10-20. The team for this event will be comprised of Andrew Barker (Lakewood, Colo.Garmin-Felt-Holowesko), Danny Summerhill (Englewood, Colo./Garmin-Felt-Holowesko), Rob Squire (Sandy, Utah/Garmin-Felt-Holowesko), Jacob Rathe (Portland, Ore.), Carson Miller (Bend, Ore.), and Larry Warbasse (Traverse City, Mich./BMC Racing Team).
The same women who contested the Classica Citta di Padova are now in the Netherlands competing in the Holland Ladies Tour. The event began on August 31 and ends September 5. Click here for more information on the event's website.
