Ontario Race Looking for Pro/1/2

Published: 01/23/2012

The Dandelion Festival and the Municipality of North Grenville would like to invite you to attend the Dandelion Festival Grand Prix Race weekend on the 26th and 27th of May 2012. This annual small town festival typically brings in 11000-15000 people to the Community of North Grenville over the course of the last weekend in May each year.

There has been a large push to increase the size and scope of this festival as part of the Municipality of North Grenville’s tourism initiative Sports tourism is one of the methods North Grenville is looking at to increase its community exposure, it is a method that has worked quite well for many small communities in the United States and Europe. Our aim in North Grenville is to develop and something special in the cycling world in our small town.

The race weekend will consist of two events, a Pro/Am criterium on Saturday the 26th and a RR on sunday the 27th. Saturday’s Criterium will feature Men’s and Women’s Pro/Am with a purse of $5000 dollars cash for the men and $2000 for the women. This event will take place in front of an estimated 2000-3000 spectators as the live music grand stand and licensed food and beverage section will line the course. The course is technical and challenging and will take place in the down town core of Old Town Kemptville. On Sunday the race moves to Oxford Mills where athletes will compete on a closed 17.1km road course that will feature a 154km men’s race and a 100km women’s race. This is a beautiful flat but windy technical course and will feature a $1000 purse for the men and a $500 purse for the women.

We are excited to be building this event and hope that it will find a place on your teams calendar. The Criterium will have a field limit of 104 riders and we are looking for teams of 4-8 to keep the racing interesting and the playing ?eld more even. The road race will not have a field limit. This is not a stage race so the roster for the criterium and the road race does not need to be the same.

The Mens Pro/ Am events will be open to only those that hold a M1 or an S1/2 license or a US cat 1 or cat 2 UCI license. For the Criterium preference will being given to the S1/2/Cat1/2 teams if the field limit is met. The women’s event will be open to Elite women. Please RSVP as soon as possible as we would like to have roster lists for the teams competing in the criterium as well as brief CVs for the athletes. This will help with our team announcements and in calling the race as it takes place. We are going to be blocking rooms at the local hotel for that weekend as well as we will have lists of billets and Bed and breakfasts for the weekend. Once your team is confirmed we will get you a more complete list of accommodations.

Thanks and hope to see you on race day.

Ryan Phelps
Race Organizer and Dandelion Festival Committee Member.
